Exodus 24.12-18, Matthew 17:1-9
16 In fact, we did not rely on stories cleverly invented when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in all its power, but we saw his greatness firsthand.
17 For God the Father gave him honor and glory when, in his great glory, he has heard his voice, saying, Behold my beloved Son, who is my joy.
18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard it ourselves, since we were with him on the holy mountain.
19 Moreover, we have the word of the prophets, on which we can build strong and you do well to give it your attention, for it is like a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day and seem that the morning star rises to illuminate your coeurs.20 Know, above all, that no prophecy of Scripture is the result of an initiative personnelle.21 Indeed, it is not by a desire human prophecy was ever made, but is moved by the Holy Spirit that men spoke from God.
Dear brothers and sisters, dear friends
,
Here I am very puzzled. The baptism of a little girl is still quite common, even in France de-Christianized. A baptism is familiar. Moreover, there is the family, parish, friends who came. It is a joyous occasion. It feels familiar ground, safe.
For cons, the transfiguration, it is unclear what to do. This bizarre story of shining face, intense light, Moses and Elijah, been dead for centuries appear, voice of God that is heard from heaven ...
I believe however that we can link the baptism of Sybille, ours and this story of the Transfiguration. It was Peter who will help us.
Pierre said in his letter "we saw the magnitude (of Jesus) with our own eyes." Peter wrote these words while he is near death. Clearly, in light of its experience on Mount Tabor continued to shine on him. And yet, we are obliged to note that Peter is very discreet, very discreet in his account. Yes, he saw the greatness of Christ on this occasion, but note that it does not even mention extraordinnaires events that occurred then. Peter passed the event to reach its deeper meaning, and I think that's how we read the Bible to get to take ownership in our own lives the meaning of his stories. Moreover, Peter himself did not reposne both his own personal experience with Christ as "the word of the prophets, on which we can press firmly. " It
for Peter in the limited experience Transifiguration as in the Scriptures, li'mportant is to remember that God reveals himself and shows us his face. The faith that has just been named Sybil says that God makes himself known as it really is in the person of Jesus Christ.
Jesus is the one that has been transformed, just after he announced he was leaving his disciples to Jerusalem to die for the salvation of the world. I think that while the Father gave his Son a special blessing, assurance of his love. But did not affect the Transfiguration Jesus. If this were the case, it would not have needed to bring with him some of the companions and God would not have to talk to them: This is my beloved Son, who is my joy.
And Peter has had to remember that these words, God had already pronounced on one occasion: the baptism of Christ. The Transfiguration of Jesus is linked to his baptism, and by extension our baptism. Yes, today, in his baptism, God speaks to Sybille saying "look at Jesus, he's my son that I gave to your hello."
Even if it still does not see this account perhaps God begins to act today so special in the life of Sybille, a life where you Jean-Baptiste, Hélène and Olivier, you are called to play a special role. God wants to transform the life of this little girl, that is to say he wants to bring the full light of his love and his grace, and he wants to do the same with each of our lives.
Just as the three disciples saw Christ in a new light, we can contemplate the face of God in a new way. Too often, it seems distant, angry or indifferent. Nothing is further from the truth and the life and message of Jesus to prove it.
God invites us to see our existence from a new perspective. We feel that the act for which we have just witnessed is a ritual. Yet the Bible teaches us that the water of baptism, united with the Word of God that creates faith, is not an ordinary water.
When you plant a seed in the ground, it will take weeks to get out. And yet during all that time, it grows and grows, even if we do not see ...
Much the same with God: Under the surface, it is active, it works, it fills our lives of his greatness. We must understand that God is present also (especially) in these things that seem insignificant and banal.
Peter gives us an example when he said later in his letter: "It is a fact that you must not forget, my dear friends is that, for the Lord a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. " It also means that for God, one of our average day contains about as much sense as a thousand years of history.
Another example: think of Sybille, this little baby. We live in a society that attaches great value to children, but this has not always been the case. Do you think it is too small for the God Almighty may be interested in it and love it? You're wrong, and his baptism he said the opposite, just as Jesus when he says "what you did for one of these least brothers of mine, is to me that you did." It also means none of us is too insignificant for God can not want to attract him.
Light of the Transfiguration allows a change of perspective, a change of outlook on life, about ourselves, about God and others. These
gain height, you can embrace the entire look of the scene to better understand what is happening. It is beyond the appearance of things to find the true meaning, and Sybille, like all the baptized, must discover the true meaning of baptism.
Matthew tells us that after the light is extinguished, after Moses and Elijah had disappeared, the disciples saw no one but Jesus only. More than Moses, Elijah more symbols of the old alliance that would soon disappear.
The disciples were confronted with Jesus alone, and we too are facing him and that, even today, he said.
How long you it put Peter before grasping the meaning of what he had to live? Nobody knows. He and the apostles would anyway have to find also the meaning of what was to follow: the death of Christ to Jerusalem, resurrection, the birth of the Church. It should be understood that, even in the drama of the cross, God was present, as we learn to discern its action into our own lives.
Because we too can witness the greatness of God, we too can be witnesses of his love. We too can witness this voice that tells us about Jesus is my beloved Son, who makes all my joie.Cette voice tells us that we, in our turn, we can become children of God. We can witness every day in our daily lives which has not withdrawn and where we are invited to meet again Jesus Christ.
So may we be transfigured and transformed by the promises of the Word of God. Puissons receive new eyes to behold the greatness of Christ and see his light shine on us ...
